Why Bordeaux Wines?

Whats the big deal about Bordeaux?

Produced in the Bordeaux region of the southwest of France, Bordeaux wines are famous for their consistent excellence. Most of the wine produced in Bordeaux is red, followed by sweet white, dry whites, rosé, and sparkling wines. One of the most important things to know about Bordeaux wines is that they are a blend of grape varieties.

Why is Bordeaux wine famous for consistent excellence?

Because the two dominant grapes have different ripening seasons, even if say Cabernet Sauvignon has a bad season, Merlot would not – and vice versa.

Why are Bordeaux wines so expensive?

While many of the 'cru classé' (classed growth) wines can be quite expensive, the prices of the majority of wines produced in Bordeaux are similar to those in other wine producing regions. Keep in mind that there are over 8,000 châteaux in Bordeaux, and only a small percentage of these are classed growths.

What are the 5 grapes in Bordeaux wine?

As a refresher, currently, Bordeaux allows six red grape varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Carmenere, and Petit Verdot — and eight white varieties — Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Muscadelle, Colombard, Ugni Blanc, Merlot Blanc, and Mauzac.

Why is Bordeaux called Claret?

“Claret” was the nickname for Bordeaux wines, it meant “clear,” “pale” or “light-colored” wine (“claret” being derived from the Latin word for “clear”).

How long do Bordeaux wines last?

If you want to turn a profit by investing in Bordeaux, it's wise to purchase pre-arrivals and keep the wines in storage for a minimum of ten years before you resell them. Bordeaux wines usually reach their peak value approximately 20 to 30 years after release, depending on the quality of the vintage.
